Maruti Dzire’s Big Comeback, Could It Be India’s No.1 Car Once Again?

Maruti Dzire’s Big Comeback, Could It Be India’s No.1 Car Once Again

The Maruti Dzire may be on its way to making history once again. After a gap of seven years, this popular compact sedan is likely to reclaim the title of India’s best-selling car, Maruti Dzire’s Big Comeback a position it last held in 2018.

Sedans rarely dominate the Indian car market, which is now largely driven by hatchbacks and SUVs. In fact, over the last four decades, only one sedan has ever topped the annual sales charts — and that car was the Dzire. Now, in 2025, it looks ready to repeat the feat.

Between January and November, Maruti Suzuki sold 1,95,416 units of the Dzire. This puts it ahead of its closest rival, the Hyundai Creta, by 7,448 units. The Creta currently sits in second place with 1,87,968 units sold during the same period.

Tata’s Nexon follows closely in third position with 1,81,186 units, while Maruti’s own WagonR and Ertiga take fourth and fifth places, selling 1,79,663 units and 1,75,404 units, respectively.

What makes this achievement special is the fact that sedans have been steadily losing ground in India. Buyers today prefer SUVs for their road presence and ground clearance, while hatchbacks remain popular for city use. Despite this trend, the Dzire has continued to attract buyers with its fuel efficiency, reliability, comfortable ride, and affordable ownership costs.

It’s also a reminder of Maruti Suzuki’s long-standing dominance in the Indian market. Since 1985, Maruti cars have almost always topped the sales charts. The only recent exception was 2024, when the Tata Punch became India’s best-selling car.

If the Dzire finishes the year at the top, it will once again prove that a well-packaged sedan can still win over Indian buyers, even in an SUV-driven market. Its strong performance highlights the trust customers continue to place in Maruti Suzuki and the Dzire brand.

With one month still to go, all eyes are on whether the Dzire can officially seal its place as India’s best-selling car of the year — a rare and impressive achievement for a sedan in today’s market.
